The Western Cape Closed 2026 was a fantastic experience for Mini Masters Chess Academy, with 16 participants proudly representing the academy from different schools — 5 from Rhenish, 5 from Somerset College, 4 from Eikestad and 2 from Stellenbosch Laerskool.

In the U7 section, Layla delivered an outstanding performance, achieving gold with a perfect 6/6 score. Dakalo from Somerset College also had an excellent tournament, securing 3rd place. Joy, Meng, and Emma Rose all finished among the top 15 U7 girls, showing great fighting spirit throughout the event.

In the U7 boys section, twins Daniel and Peter from Somerset College both played very well, with Daniel finishing in the top 15. Although it was a tougher tournament for Alexander from Rhenish, every tournament brings valuable lessons and experience, and we are confident that next year will be even better for him.

In the U9 girls section, Aacha from Rhenish scored an impressive 4/6. Being the youngest player in her category, she showed great determination and fought bravely throughout the tournament.

In the U9 boys section, Philip from Rhenish scored 3/6 and gained important experience against strong opposition.

For the U11 girls, Danielle started brilliantly with 3/4 on the first day, but unfortunately the second day did not go her way. Iliana also delivered an impressive achievement, scoring 3/6 in her very first Western Cape Closed tournament while competing in her first year in the U11 category. Considering the limited preparation leading up to the event, her performance highlighted her natural talent and great potential. We will certainly be watching her progress closely in the years ahead. The same happened for Izak in the U11 boys section, who also began strongly with 3/4. Merwen’s first participation at this level went very well, and he managed to score an impressive 3/6.

In the U13 section, Sebastian and Gustaf represented the academy. While it was not Sebastian’s tournament, every chess player experiences difficult events, and these moments help build character and resilience. Gustaf, on the other hand, had an incredible first participation, defeating players rated 1500 and 1600 while being rated only 1300 himself.

We are extremely proud of every single player who participated. Their hard work, determination, and courage to compete at such a high level truly reflect the spirit of Mini Masters Chess Academy. Well done to all our players!
